Alcohol pricing in Scotland – does it affect your food shopping?

Empty bottles and cans

What’s on offer?

A podcast of an informal discussion with Professor Paul McNamee, part of the Café Connect podcast series by the University of Aberdeen.

What’s it about?

Does Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP) for alcohol have unintended consequences for diet quality and health? Alcohol MUP was introduced in Scotland in May 2018 as part of the Scottish Government’s strategy to reduce the health and social harms associated with alcohol misuse. Our conversation with Professor Paul McNamee will look at the research trying to understand whether household food spending was reduced following the introduction of MUP and the effect that this has on diet quality. We will discuss whether changes to diet quality have consequences for health.

Who’s leading the event?

Professor Paul McNamee, Health Economics Research Unit, Institute of Applied Health Sciences, University of Aberdeen
