Cartoonathon: Youth Dialogue on Social Media

What’s on offer?

The event will include a 3-week long take-over between 3 - 26 November of the Instagram account of our partner organisation, Shout Out UK. The take-over will involve posts of cartoons, Instagram lives with professional cartoonists, and cartooning tutorials, in collaboration with Cartooning for Peace. This will culminate in a cartoon competition for 15-25 year-olds: there will be three parallel competitions, one responding to each core theme (environment, inequality, and the pandemic), and each with a prize of a £50 gift card. Cartoons will be judged by a group of professional cartoonists and a winner will be announced on the final day of the campaign. Submissions can be made by emailing lias@le.ac.uk with the subject line Cartoonathon Submission or by posting on Instagram with the hashtag #SOUKCartoonathon no later than midnight on 25 November. Winners will be announced w/c 29 November.

What’s it about?

Whether you’re a cartooning novice or an experienced comic artist, if you’re 15-25 years old the cartoonathon is a great opportunity to share your own social and political opinions via the medium of political cartoons. Get involved and influence the debates that directly impact young people today: environmental awareness, social inequalities, and the COVID-19 pandemic! We're providing you with the tools and a platform to really engage with social issues - read, understand, and create - through the medium of political cartoons.

Who’s leading the event?

Dr Kara Blackmore, Research Associate at University of Leicester; Sarah Weidman, Research Associate at University of Leicester; Dr James Illingworth, Research Associate at University of Leicester. In association with Shout Out UK, Cartooning for Peace, and the Cartoon Museum.
