A holiday without leaving campus? Come visit the university getaway! This is a place to relax, recharge, and explore what makes a sustainable tourist. Sip a squash, write a postcard, and snap a selfie. Leave only footprints (and perhaps some painting) and take only photos (plus pick up some plastic). We are open to welcome visitors 11am – 4pm Fri/Sat/Sun. Stay as long as you like. Join in as many tourism themed activities as you wish. No booking necessary.
The university getaway is a place to think about tourism. Tourism is an industry that brings many benefits to hosts and guests. But it can also cause many harmful impacts, such as pollution. Making tourism more sustainable means trying to increase the positive effects of tourism, whilst lessening the negatives. The getaway explores ways that tourists can help to make tourism more sustainable. It is a place to share ideas and gain knowledge. Visitors will make our getaway place (through our graffiti wall!). They will learn about sustainable tourism (via interactive displays!). Ultimately, visitors will become more sustainable tourists themselves, taking only photos (at our selfie stations!), and leaving only footprints (on our departure board!).
Brendan Canavan, who is assistant professor of marketing at University of Nottingham, will be coordinating the university getaway place. Colleagues will be invited to help manage and animate.
The university getaway space is open to all ages. We have activities suitable for tourists big and small! The getaway space will be promoted through social media (Twitter, Instagram using the hashtag #universitygetaway) in the weeks beforehand.
